Heat Pump Systems
Single Split (single room) Heat Pump Systems
A split system has an exterior compressor unit connected to an interior unit by copper pipes in a loop containing a refrigerant gas. The interior unit is made up of an electronically controlled fan circulating air over a finned radiator that has the refrigerant running through it. The unit either cools or heats the air depending on the direction of the cycle. See the Types of Heat Pumps here.
Multi-Split (multiple room systems) Heat Pump System
Multi-Split systems are designed to allow several indoor units to be connected to a single outdoor unit. This allows the best model type to be selected for each and every room.
The Multi-Split system maintains exterior aesthetics by reducing the number of outdoor units required, and also provides the ability to economically add indoor units at a later date. The capacity of the outdoor system depends on combined capacity of the connected indoor units. Manufacturers have different system configurations and capacities.
See the Types of Heat Pumps that can be connected on a Multi Split system here

Ducted (whole house) Heat Pump Systems
A large heat pump (air handler) is mounted in the ceiling space (or sometimes under the house) and connected to the exterior compressor unit by a refrigerant loop. The indoor unit heats or cools the air, and distributes it with a fan through insulated tubes into each room via vents in the ceiling or floor. Ducted systems are excellent for whole house heating but need to be designed carefully to take into account correct capacity sizing and the principles of air flow and temperature control.
Hot Water Heat Pumps Systems
Hot Water Heat Pumps (also known as Heat Pump Water Heaters) use the same technology that heats air to heat water in a very energy efficient way. Hot water heat pumps can gather their heat energy from outdoor air, ground sources (Geo thermal) or water source (ponds and lakes). They can be used to heat water for a variety of uses:
- Spas & Swimming pools
- Domestic & Commercial hot water
- Underfloor heating
- Hydroponics
